James Bond news: Denis Villeneuve reloads his cinematic holster

Amazon MGM Studios have scoured the globe for a director to take the Bond franchise forward.

They have now stumbled upon one of the greatest cinematic directors of all time: Denis Villeneuve.

Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo provides the thoughts from inside the Bond umbrella.

Villeneuve a “die-hard James Bond fan”

On his entry into the Bond realm, Villeneuve said: “I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory,” Villeneuve told the BBC.

“I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.”

Villeneuve has also been positioned as executive producer on the next film, with plenty of successful features under his belt.

His work on 2016’s Oscar-nominated Arrival, the visually complex Blade Runner 2049, as well as the revolutionary, box-office-breaking Dune franchise are notable features in his directorial catalogue.

What the iconic French-Canadian director brings to Bond

Considering all the creative shifts and uncertainty the franchise has experienced over the last few years, Villeneuve’s pending stylistic imprint is indicative of a franchise that’s going into an entirely revitalised direction.

Head of Amazon MGM Studios Mike Hopkins commented on Villeneuve’s cinematic dynamism, honouring him as a “cinematic master” who has redefined “immersive storytelling”.

The psychologically complex and visually dynamic, atmospheric feel of Bond will change forever with Villeneuve at the helm.

Bond will transcend the world of 007 conceptually — the upcoming film will truly catapult Bond into the realm of the ‘timeless’.

Spokesman for the James Bond International Fan Club, Ajay Chowdhury said: “It is testimony to the cultural weight of the nearly 70 years old film series that a director of such critical and commercial weight wants to and has been chosen to direct the next instalment.”

“His team will executive produce the picture, a first for a Bond director.

“This is testimony to his status as a helmer with final cut and his position in the cinematic landscape as one the top practitioners of the craft,” he continued.

The poetic, existential symbolism of Denis Villeneuve films

Similar to what Villeneuve will plan to do with Bond, in Blade Runner 2049 he made sure that he remained true to the storytelling essence of the original by attaching his own cinematic identity to it.

His symbolic commentary on the struggles of solitude, memory, and the existential yearning for connection is unrivaled in cinema.

The emotional detachment of Villeneuve’s characters from the world, whose decisions can detrimentally impact the very world they’re detached from, is perfect for the Bond archetype.

His characters are lonely symbols of the world’s void who are burdened by their unchosen destiny and the historical significance of that very destiny chosen for them.

From Blade Runner 2049, to Dune, and even back in the Enemy and Arrival days, these are prominent, and prevalent themes that have stuck with viewers pertaining to Villeneuve’s ingenious direction.

This will be the most poignant, meaningful, and emotionally complex side of Bond we have ever seen.

From a man with a license to kill, to a man wounded by the weight of that very license.

Ladies and gentlemen — the new 007.

Aidan Leo

Aidan Leo is a passionate, expressive and bold writer who although makes use of unnecessarily extensive vocabulary at times, he more than makes up for it with his enthusiasm and love for cinema.

Whether it be the intensity and social commentary of classics like A Few Good Men and Fight Club, or the joyous and slightly controversial hilarity of Step Brothers and The Heat, he loves them all.

His other passions include sports, photography/videography, food, fashion, music, and anime.

As Matthew McConaughey’s David says in Dazed and Confused, “The older you do get, the more rules they’re gonna try to get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin’ man. L-I-V-I-N.” A quote Aidan prides himself on and one he looks to, to continue following his dreams and passions.
